Early career

Cena first started training to become a wrestler in 2000 at the California-based Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW) where he created the character, The Prototype. After UPW he was signed to a World Wrestling Entertainment developmental contract and assigned to "farm territory" Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW).

During his time in OVW, he also appeared on the UPN reality show Manhunt under the pseudonym "Big Tim Kingman", the "lead hunter" in a team "hunting" contestant with paint ball guns. The show was produced in association with WWE. It was later revealed that many of the scenes in the show were re-shot or staged to enhance the drama, contests were rigged to eliminate contestants, and other contestants read from scripts. As a result of the controversy, WWE has never referenced the show or Cena's part in it. [1][2][3][4]

Cena's first televised WWE match was in answer to an open challenge by Kurt Angle on June 27, 2002. Inspired by Vince McMahon's (kayfabe) speech to WWE's rising stars, exhorting them to show "ruthless aggression" to earn a place among the legends, Cena took advantage of the opportunity and almost beat Kurt Angle kicking out of the Angle Slam and enduring the Ankle Lock submission hold, but ultimately lost to a hard, amateur-style pin.

Cena then played the role of a typical underdog face in each match. After losing, along side Billy Kidman, in a tournament match for the WWE Tag Team Championships, Cena turned heel, blaming Kidman for the loss. Shortly after his heel turn, on a Halloween episode of SmackDown!, he performed a freestyle rap for Stephanie McMahon while wearing a Vanilla Ice costume prompting a gimmick change to a white rapper. At first, this gimmick got Cena heel heat from the fans, but his frequent comical "freestyles" about other wrestlers helped to gain him a following. One of Cena's signature symbols during this time was the classic WWF logo (without the "F") along with the slogan "Word Life".

Cena eventually had a long running feud with Brock Lesnar over the WWE Championship. During the feud he unveiled a new signature finishing maneuver, the F-U, as a counterpart to Lesnar's similar F-5 (the name being derived from a combination of "F-5" and the shorthand for "**** You")[citation needed]. The two eventually joined forces when Lesnar also turned heel and together feuded with Kurt Angle and Eddie Guerrero before Cena turned face by betraying Lesnar and feuding with him again. Cena established his signature "you can't see me" catch phrase and hand gesture during this time.

2004

Cena as the U.S. Champion with his customized "Spinner" U.S. Title Belt.During 2004 Cena's popularity began to increase. At the start of the year, he participated in the annual January Royal Rumble, lasting up to the final 6 before being eliminated by Big Show. After the elimination Cena and Big Show began a feud, leading to Cena winning the United States Championship from Show in a match at March's WrestleMania XX. Cena claimed the title, his first in WWE, by distracting the ref and using his signature brass knuckles on Big Show before hitting him with the F-U. In July he was stripped of the title by SmackDown! General Manager Kurt Angle, whom he had a contentious relationship with, after "attacking" him.

He won the title back at October's No Mercy after winning the final match of a Best-of-5 series with Booker T. This second reign was short-lived, however, as he lost the title to the debuting Carlito in the very next weeks SmackDown!.

This started a feud with Carlito, during which Cena was (kayfabe) attacked in a Boston nightclub by Carlito's bodyguard, Jesús, who stabbed him in the kidney, keeping him out of action for a month. In truth, this event was set up to allow Cena time off to film The Marine. Upon his return, Cena exacted revenge on Carlito in a SmackDown! match, winning back the U.S. title. During this reign he debuted his custom made spinner style title belt.

2005

At the 2005 Royal Rumble, Cena and Batista went over the top rope at the same time to end the match, prompting Vince McMahon to demand the match be restarted and go into "sudden death".

With Batista choosing to vie for the (RAW exclusive) World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 21, SmackDown! held a tournament to determine #1 contendership for the their WWE Championship. In the finals Cena pinned Kurt Angle to win the WrestleMania title shot.

In the following weeks, Cena feuded with champion John Bradshaw Layfield (JBL) and his Cabinet, including losing his United States Championship to Cabinet member Orlando Jordan, who (with JBL) proceeded to "blow up" the custom spinner belt. It was during this feud that Cena first began referring to his fans as "Chain Gang Soldiers" (often shorted to just "Chain Gang").

On April 3, at WrestleMania 21, Cena defeated JBL to win the WWE Championship. As part of the storyline, he then had a custom WWE Championship belt made similar to his custom U.S. title belt, featuring a spinner-type WWE logo plate. Meanwhile, JBL took the original belt and claimed he was still the WWE Champion.

Cena after winning the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 21.Cena successfully defended his title against JBL in a bloody "I Quit" Match at Judgment Day in May when he forced JBL to quit by cornering him against a glass pane, and threatening to hit him with a tractor trailer's exhaust pipe. In the process Cena was able to reclaim the original title belt, though he continued to carry his version.

On the June 6th episode of RAW, John Cena became the first wrestler drafted in the annual draft lottery, when Eric Bischoff drafted him from SmackDown! over to RAW. Upon arriving on RAW, Cena immediately entered a program with Chris Jericho and Christian, two wrestlers with strong cult followings. Taking on these two seemingly began a trend of fan backlash against Cena. He went on to defeat Christian and Jericho in a Triple Threat match at the June Vengeance event by knocking Jericho out of the ring and pinning Christian.

During this feud Cena made (kayfabe) enemies with RAW General Manager Eric Bischoff with Bischoff vowing to make Cena's stint on RAW difficult and choosing Chris Jericho to take Cena's title from him.

On August 22, Cena beat Jericho again, this time in a "You're Fired" match for the WWE Championship - despite General Manager Bischoff giving Cena a low-blow and handing Jericho a pair of brass knuckles. After the match, with Jericho now off of RAW due to his loss, Kurt Angle came to the ring and attacked Cena, with Bischoff revealing that Angle was his new "hand picked" number one contender for Cena's world title. Despite Angle's best attempts to attain heel heat, the fans continued to cheer him and boo Cena.

After several weeks of feuding, Angle and Cena main evented September's Unforgiven, where Cena lost to Angle by disqualification after hitting him with the WWE title belt, meaning Cena would still be champion (titles don't change hands on a disqualification or count out). They met again at November's Survivor Series, with Cena picking up the win this time.

When Vince McMahon returned to RAW to (kayfabe) put Bischoff on trial in December, Cena made his opinion of Bischoff known and eventually helped Vince McMahon remove Bischoff from the show by delivering the F-U to the former RAW GM, effectively ending the hostilities he had with Bischoff.

2006

Cena successfully defended his WWE Championship in an Elimination Chamber at the January New Years Revolution to kick off 2006, to the dismay of many in attendance. However, after the match, Vince McMahon announced that Cena was going to have to defend the WWE Championship again, this time against Edge, who was cashing in his previously earned Money in the Bank title shot. Edge delivered two spears to a tired Cena, pinning him in short order to win the WWE Championship. Cena's championship reign ended at 280 days, matching that of previous champion JBL.

Three weeks, to the day, after losing the title Cena defeated Edge at the Royal Rumble to regain the WWE Championship. During this time WWE announcers, most notably Jim Ross, were forced to acknowledge the negative reactions Cena was getting and began to refer to him as a "controversial champion" saying that he was alienating some fans with his "unorthodox style".

Cena after his victory over Triple H at WrestleMania 22.Jerry Lawler would often suggest that Cena was too young, edgy and original for the older audience to appreciate. Cena continued to polarize crowds leading up to WrestleMania 22, during which he was soundly jeered during his main event win over Triple H. Despite Triple H's best attempts to get heat, the crowd continued to favor him over Cena. Both Cena and Vince McMahon were reported as being (legitly) upset by fans' negativity, though Cena stated that the fans "obviously had a choice in deciding whom they wanted to root for".

The crowd began to cheer Cena once again after April's Backlash, most notably when he began to side with the popular Shawn Michaels in matches against the Spirit Squad. After Cena stopped taking part in this angle and moved on to working against Rob Van Dam there was once again a notable mixture of cheers and boos in most every arena visited, with some being more pro-Cena and some more against him.

On the May 22nd edition of RAW, Rob Van Dam informed Cena that he intended to cash in the Money in the Bank title match contract he won at WrestleMania at the upcoming Extreme Championship Wrestling One Night Stand pay-per-view event. The event saw Cena get his most negative reaction yet from the very pro-ECW crowd, including profanity-laced chants and anti-Cena signs. Cena lost the title at the event when Edge appeared from under the ring and speared Cena through a table, setting him up for Van Dam's Five Star Frog Splash. With two referees "knocked out" (the first by Cena, the second by Edge) Paul Heyman ran down the entrance aisle and counted the three count, giving Van Dam the win and his first world title. On the next nights RAW Paul Heyman announced that the title change was official, as the match was under "Extreme rules".

When Edge won the title from Van Dam in a Triple Threat match (also involving Cena) it re-ignited the feud between Edge and Cena. The opening stages of the feud saw Edge taking constant shortcuts in order to keep his title (losing by disqualification).

Interacting with the audience during an informative speech?

I'm a young student and this is my first time to compose and deliver a speech for my English subject..I was wondering if it is okay to interact with the audience(my classmates and teacher for the subject). The speech is about teens(youth), the things that keeps them(us) from the right way, why these happens and how to avoid or stop it. I'd be pretending to be a doctor of psychology and the audience, I'd ask them to pretend as the parents. So um the audience is basically composed of parents..................

NOW my questions are:

Is it legal for an informative speech to be interactive to the audience? Can I ask them questions and ask for answers?

Is it alright to say "right?" in a manner of inquiring if they agree.

Asking for example: ....since they are parents, well I'd already know they have kids, so I might be asking how many and maybe how old their kids are. Also, I could be asking them if they have one of the problems that I've just delivered and what do to make things right

Interacting with the audience during an informative speech?
Not everyone likes to be given a list of links to look at, (No matter how relevant they are). If you would like me to delete the answer, then contact me and I will, no hard feelings.

I would have thought that an informative speech, is just that, it informs, what you are proposing is an interactive speech whereby you engage in social discourse with the audience.

Don't forget the danger of giving someone else the stage, they steal the show.

A realistic examination of gangster rap?

Gangster rap music -

I like gangster rap music and still do but I see it as a form of brainwashing currently and think that what people have take into account that it's still a majority white audience who lives in the suburbs - young, white people who are into rebelling against their parents who buy this stuff and think it's just a kick , it's fun anotherwords . It's just a way of expressing their anti-authoritarianism . However these kids never lived in the ghetto , never experienced real authoritarianism and I feel the music really losses its purpose in that sense .

On the other hand black kids listen and think " Oh , that's what it means to be black . That's how you make money . That's how you become rich and famous and get on TV , get music videos and live in mansion . And that's how you either get the boys or the girls . " The girls think they have to be half-naked and spinning around like they're on meth in order to get any attention . It really corrupts people and I think it adds to some serious sociological problems , like the high out-of-wedlock birth rate because of this hypersexual imagery that then the kids adapt to some kind of reality . I mean , it's inauthentic . It's not in keeping with great black traditions of struggle and excellence , from Willie Mays to Aretha Franklin but even in terms of academics , going back to people like Charles Drew or Ben Carson who is a neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins University. That stuff all of a sudden, is pushed aside . That's treated as , " You're a nerd , you're acting white . Does anyone have any ideas about how to present the photoelctric effect to a younger (middle school age-ish) audience? I'm part of a scientific demonstration group at my college, and we have a quantum mechanics show that we perform for anyone from elementary schoolers to adults and teachers. I'm currently using a zinc plate and UV wave generator, which generally makes the younger kids' eyes glaze over.

still exploring this ... or at least the views people have about it. ok, for the sake of arguement, let me make these two points absolutely clear ... I are talking about adults (18 and over ... not interested in immature woman my age or younger ... but by 18 your should no longer be a child) and serious, long term relationships (not one night stands or vacation romances, sugar daddies, etc/)

my gut feeling is that younger girls (majority of YA audience in this catagory??) are much more likely to automatically think this is creepy. I admit that when I was 18 everybody over 21 was "old" and I did not generally socialize with that group or really differentiate between 30 and 50 crowd. older than me was was just old, period. with the benefit of hindsight, there is not very reasonable. I am out to test this hypothesis.

The Wallace and Grommit series and the feature length "Chicken Run" were aimed at families, with simple plots and some jokes aimed at adult viewers.

The ones with the talking animals (forget the name of the two films) were aimed at a much older audience, with some subtle sexual references included.
Reply:Aardman has appeal across the board; the claymation appeals to a younger audience but often the content is more adult-oriented.

I would suggest the audience for my piece of original writing to be young children, aged around twelve or thirteen years old. This is because the story is written in simple English vocabulary, with no difficult complex sentences. This is why it appeals to children that find reading difficult because the lexis is simple and also the story line is easy to follow. Having an uncomplicated story line would keep those children who don’t like reading intrigued because is not complicated.

Reply:Have you read any Harry Potter? These are books much favoured by the age group you mention and yet they could hardly be described as simple and uncomplicated. Don't categorise all children as unable to understand complex plots and characters. Of course avoid language that is too 'highbrow' but don't talk down to your readers.

A joke is a short story or series of words spoken or communicated with the intent of being laughed at or found humorous by either listener/reader or performer/writer. A practical joke differs in that the humor is not verbal, but mainly physical (e.g. throwing a custard pie in the direction of somebody's face). Some jokes are not funny.

Jokes are performed either in a staged situation, such as a comedy in front of an audience, or informally for the entertainment of participants and onlookers. The desired response is generally laughter, although loud groans are also a common response to some forms of jokes, such as puns and shaggy dog stories.

Why we laugh has been the subject of serious academic study, examples being:

Immanuel Kant, in Critique of Judgement (1790) states that "Laughter is an effect that arises if a tense expectation is transformed into nothing." Here is Kant's two hundred and seventeen year old joke and his analysis:

"An Indian at an Englishman's table in Surat saw a bottle of ale being opened, and all the beer, turned to froth, rushed out. Marvin Minsky in Society of Mind (1986).

Marvin Minsky suggests that laughter has a specific function related to the human brain. In his opinion jokes and laughter are mechanisms for the brain to learn nonsense. For that reason, he argues, jokes are usually not as funny when you hear them repeatedly.

Edward de Bono in "The Mechanism of the Mind" (1969) and "I am Right, You are Wrong" (1990).

Edward de Bono suggests that the mind is a pattern-matching machine, and that it works by recognizing stories and behavior and putting them into familiar patterns. When a familiar connection is disrupted and an alternative unexpected new link is made in the brain via a different route than expected, then laughter occurs as the new connection is made. This theory explains a lot about jokes. For example:

Why jokes are only funny the first time they are told: once they are told the pattern is already there, so there can be no new connections, and so no laughter.

Why jokes have an elaborate and often repetitive set up: The repetition establishes the familiar pattern in the brain. Laughter, the intended human reaction to jokes, is healthful in moderation, uses the stomach muscles, and releases endorphins, natural happiness-inducing chemicals, into the bloodstream.

One of the most complete and informative books on different types of jokes and how to tell them is Isaac Asimov's Treasury of Humor (1971), which encompasses several broad categories of humor, and gives useful tips on how to tell them, whom to tell them to, and ways to change the joke to fit one's audience.

The rules of humor are analogous to those of poetry, as said the French philosopher Henri Bergson: "In every wit there is something of a poet"[1](In this essay Bergson viewed the essence of humour as the encrustation of the mechanical upon the living. Speed also plays a role, such as enhancing the laugh effect. As Mack Sennett showed in his works, the more frantic the funnier.

To reach exactness, the comedian must choose the words in order to obtain a vivid, perfectly in focus image, and to avoid being generic (that drives the audience confused, and results in no laugh); to properly arrange the words in the sentence is also crucial to get exactness. An example by Woody Allen (from Side Effects, "A Giant Step for Mankind" story [2]):

“ Grasping the mouse firmly by the tail, I snapped it like a small whip, and the morsel of cheese came loose. ”

As Shakespeare said in Hamlet, "Brevity is the soul of wit"[2]. That means that a joke is best when it expresses the maximum meaning with a minimal number of words; this is today considered one of the key technical elements of a joke. An example from Woody Allen:

“ I took a speed reading course and read War and Peace in twenty minutes. It involves Russia. ”

Though, the familiarity of the pattern of "brevity" has lead to numerous examples of jokes where the very length is itself the pattern breaking "punchline". Numerous examples from Monty Python exist, for instance, the song "I Like Traffic Lights", and more modernly, Family Guy contains numerous such examples, most notably, in the episode Wasted Talent where Peter Griffin bangs his shin, a classic slapstick trope, and holds his shin whilst exhaling and inhaling to quiet the pain. This goes on for considerably longer than expected. This joke is repeated again in the fourth season in the episode Brian Goes Back to College when Peter is dressed as John "Hannibal" Smith from The A-Team.

The joke content (meaning) is not what provokes the laugh, it just makes the salience of the joke and provokes a smile. What makes us laugh is the joke mechanism. Milton Berle demonstrated this with a classic theatre experiment in the 1950s: if during a series of jokes you insert phrases that are not jokes, but with the same rhythm, the audience laughs anyway. A classic is the ternary rhythm, with three beats: introduction, premise, antithesis (with the antithesis being the punch line).

In regards to the Milton Berle experiment, they can be taken to demonstrate the concept of "breaking context" or "breaking the pattern". It isn't necessarily the Rhythm that caused the audience to laugh, but the disparity between the expectation of a "joke" and being instead given a non-sequitur "normal phrase." This normal phrase is, itself, unexpected, and is a kind of punchline.

When a technically-good joke is referred changing it with paraphrasing, it is not laughable anymore; this is because the paraphrase, changing some term or moving it within the sentence, breaks the joke mechanism (its vividness, brevity and rhythm), and its power and effectiveness are lost. Douglas Adams described sentences where the joke word is the final word as "comically weighted." This saves the "payoff" until the last possible moment, allowing the expectation for surprise to reach its highest point, while the mind is more firmly rooted in the pattern established by the rest of the sentence. [edit] Why do we laugh (model of appreciation)

No satisfactory theory of laughter that explains why humans laugh has yet gained wide acceptance.

Some of the prominent explanations (that is a humor appreciation model) comes from part of the ideas contained in the psychology essay Jokes and their Relation to the Unconscious, by Sigmund Freud (1905) [3].

According to Freud's operational description, we laugh when the unconscious energy emerges to reach the conscious mind; and it reaches it unexpectedly thanks to the techniques used by the comedian. This exceeding energy is rapidly discharged in the form of laughter.

Freud distinguishes three fields: the comic, the wit, and the humor.

In the comic field plays the 'economy of ideative expenditure'; in other words excessive energy is wasted or action-essential energy is saved. The profound meaning of a comic gag or a comic joke is "I'm a child"; the comic deals with the clumsy body of the child.

Laurel and Hardy are a classic example. An individual laughs because he recognizes the child that is in himself. In clowns stumbling is a childish tempo. In the comic, the visual gags may be translated into a joke. For example in Side Effects (By Destiny Denied story) by Woody Allen:

“ "My father used to wear loafers," she confessed. "Both on the same foot". ”

The typical comic technique is the disproportion.

In the wit field plays the "economy of censorship expenditure"[3](Freud literally calls it "the economy of psychic expenditure".); usually censorship prevents some 'dangerous ideas' from reaching the conscious mind, or helps us avoid saying everything that comes to mind; adversely, the wit circumvents the censorship and brings up those ideas. Different wit techniques allow one to express them in a funny way. The profound meaning behind a wit joke is "I have dangerous ideas". An example from Woody Allen:

“ I contemplated suicide again - this time by inhaling next to an insurance salesman. ”

Wit is a branch of rhetoric, and there are about 200 techniques (technically they are called tropes, a particular kind of figure of speech) that can be used to make jokes[4].

Irony can be seen as belonging to this field.

In the comedy field, humor induces an "economized expenditure of emotion" (Freud literally calls it "economy of affect" or "economy of sympathy". Freud produced this final part of his interpretation many years later, in a paper later supplemented to the book.).[3][5] In other words, the joke erases an emotion that should be felt about an event, making us insensitive to it. The profound meaning of the void feel of a humor joke is "I'm a cynic". An example from Woody Allen:

This field of jokes is still a grey area, being mostly unexplored. Extensive use of this kind of humor can be found in the work of British satirist Chris Morris, like the sketches of the Jam television program.

Gruner discusses several "sick joke" cycles that occurred upon events surrounding Gary Hart, Natalie Wood, Vic Morrow, Jim Bakker, Richard Pryor, and Michael Jackson, noting how several jokes were recycled from one cycle to the next. For example: A joke about Vic Morrow ("We now know that Vic Morrow had dandruff: they found his head and shoulders in the bushes") was subsequently recycled and applied to the crew of the Challenger space shuttle ("How do we know that Christa McAuliffe had dandruff? They found her head and shoulders on the beach.").[22]

Berger asserts that "whenever there is a popular joke cycle, there generally is some widespread kind of social and cultural anxiety, lingering below the surface, that the joke cycle helps people deal with".[23]

Jokes often depend on the humor of the unexpected, the mildly taboo (which can include the distasteful or socially improper), or playing off stereotypes and other cultural beliefs. Many jokes fit into more than one category.

Political jokes are usually a form of satire. They generally concern politicians and heads of state, but may also cover the absurdities of a country's political situation. Two large categories of this type of jokes exist. The first one makes fun of a negative attitude to political opponents or to politicians in general. The second one makes fun of political clichés, mottos, catch phrases or simply blunders of politicians. Some, especially the you have two cows genre, derive humor from comparing different political systems.

Professional humor includes caricatured portrayals of certain professions such as lawyers, and in-jokes told by professionals to each other.

Mathematical jokes are a form of in-joke, generally designed to be understandable only by insiders.

Ethnic jokes exploit ethnic stereotypes. They are often racist and frequently considered offensive.

For example, the British tell jokes starting "An Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman..." which exploit the supposed parsimony of the Scot, stupidity of the Irish, or some combination. The British find humor in poking fun at any race, including their own, although this statement is a gross generalisation. Such jokes exist among numerous peoples.

Additionally, many cultures have Black jokes, which exploit the supposed stupidity and/or supposed incompetence of people of African descent.

Racially offensive humor is increasingly unacceptable, but there are similar jokes based on other stereotypes such as blonde jokes.

Religious jokes fall into several categories:

Jokes based on stereotypes associated with people of religion (e.g. nun jokes, priest jokes, or rabbi jokes)

Jokes on classical religious subjects: crucifixion, Adam and Eve, St. Peter at The Gates, etc.

Jokes that collide different religious denominations: "A rabbi, a medicine man, and a pastor went fishing..."

Letters and addresses to God.

Self-deprecating or self-effacing humor is superficially similar to racial and stereotype jokes, but involves the targets laughing at themselves. It is said to maintain a sense of perspective and to be powerful in defusing confrontations. Probably the best-known and most common example is Jewish humor. The egalitarian tradition was strong among the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe in which the powerful were often mocked subtly. Prominent members of the community were kidded during social gatherings, part a good-natured tradition of humor as a leveling device. A similar situation exists in the Scandinavian "Ole and Lena" joke.

Self-deprecating humor has also been used by politicians, who recognize its ability to acknowledge controversial issues and steal the punch of criticism - for example, when Abraham Lincoln was accused of being two-faced he replied, "If I had two faces, do you think this is the one I’d be wearing?".

Dirty jokes are based on taboo, often sexual, content or vocabulary. Many dirty jokes are also sexist.

Other taboos are challenged by sick jokes and gallows humor; to joke about disability is considered in this group.

Surrealist or minimalist jokes exploit semantic inconsistency, for example: Q: What's red and invisible? A: No tomatoes..

Anti Jokes are jokes that aren't funny in normal sense, and often can be decidedly unfunny, but rely on absurdity, surrealism and abstractness of the joke or situation to provide entertainment.

An elephant joke is a joke, almost always a riddle or conundrum and often a sequence of connected riddles, that involves an elephant.

The question / answer joke, sometimes posed as a common riddle, has a supposedly straight question and an answer which is twisted for humorous effect; puns are often employed. Of this type are knock-knock joke, lightbulb joke, the many variations on "why did the chicken cross the road?", and the class of "What's the difference between..." joke, where the punch line is often a pun or a spoonerism linking two apparently entirely unconnected concepts.

Some jokes require a double act, where one respondent (usually the straight man) can be relied on to give the correct response to the person telling the joke. This is more common in performance than informal joke-telling.

A shaggy dog story is an extremely long and involved joke with a weak or completely nonexistent punchline. The humor lies in building up the audience's anticipation and then letting them down completely. The longer the story can continue without the audience realising it is a joke, and not a serious anecdote, the more successful it is. Shaggy jokes appear to date from the 1930s, although there are several competing variants for the "original" shaggy dog story. According to one, an advertisement is placed in a newspaper, searching for the shaggiest dog in the world. The teller of the joke then relates the story of the search for the shaggiest dog in extreme and exaggerated detail (flying around the world, climbing mountains, fending off sabre-toothed tigers, etc); a good teller will be able to stretch the story out to over half an hour. When the winning dog is finally presented, the advertiser takes a look at the dog and states: "I don't think he's so shaggy"Comedy has a classical meaning (comical theatre) and a popular one (the use of humour with an intent to provoke laughter in general). In the theater, its Western origins are in ancient Greece, like tragedy, a genre characterised by a grave fall from grace by a protagonist having high social standing. Comedy, in contrast, portrays a conflict or agon (Classical Greek ἀγών) between a young hero and an older authority, a confrontation described by Northrop Frye as a struggle between a "society of youth" and a "society of the old". A more recent development is to regard this struggle as a mere pretext for disguise, a comical device centered on uncertainties regarding the meaning of social identity. The basis of comedy would then be a plot mechanism conceived to engender misunderstandings either about a hero's identity or about social being in general. [1]

Returning to the popular term comedy, it is known to be difficult to describe. Humor being subjective, one may or may not find something humorous because it is either too offensive or not offensive enough. Comedy is judged according to a person’s taste. Some enjoy cerebral fare such as irony or black comedy; others may prefer scatological humor (e.g. the "fart joke") or slapstick. A common gender stereotype that plays on this convention is that men love the comedy of The Three Stooges, while women do not.[citation needed]

While hard to pin down, it can safely be said that most good comedy, as with a good joke, contains within it variations on the elements of surprise, incongruity, conflict, and the effect of opposite expectations. The audience becomes a part of the experience, if it is to be successful. Sometimes, it is the fulfillment of the expectation which is part of the experience, such as the long "take" of a Jack Benny, resolved, paradoxically, when the expected happens. Comedy is a serious business, and one only knows it when one sees it or hears it.

Comedy is the term applied to theatrical dramas, the chief object of which are to amuse. It is contrasted on the one hand with tragedy and on the other with farce, burlesque, and so on. As compared with tragedy, it is distinguished by having a (the comedies).

The word "comedy" is derived from the Classical Greek κωμῳδία, which is a compound either of κῶμος (revel) or κώμη (village) and ᾠδή (singing): it is possible that κῶμος itself is derived from κώμη, and originally meant a village revel.

In ancient Greece, comedy seems to have originated in bawdy and ribald songs or recitations apropos of fertility festivals or gatherings, or also in poking fun at other people or stereotypes.[2]

Aristotle, in his Poetics, tells us the same: that comedy originated in Phallic songs and the light treatment of the otherwise base and ugly. He also adds that the origins of comedy are obscure because it was not treated seriously.[3]

P.W. Buckham writes that "the lighter sort of Iambic became Comic poets, the graver became Tragic instead of Heroic".[4]

The word comes into modern usage through the Latin comoedia and Italian commedia. It has passed through various shades of meaning. In the middle ages it meant simply a story with a happy ending. The adjective "comic" (Greek κωμικός), which strictly means that which relates to comedy, is in modern usage generally confined to the sense of "laughter-provoking": it is distinguished from "humorous" or "witty" inasmuch as it is applied to an incident or remark which provokes spontaneous laughter without a special mental effort. The phenomena connected with laughter and that which provokes it, the comic, have been carefully investigated by psychologists, in contrast with other phenomena connected with the emotions. Understanding humour

Some claim that humour cannot or should not be explained. Author E. B. White once said that "Humour can be dissected as a frog can, but the thing dies in the process and the innards are discouraging to any but the pure scientific mind." However, attempts to do just that have been made.

The term "humour" as formerly applied in comedy, referred to the interpretation of the sublime and the ridiculous. In this context, humour is often a subjective experience as it depends on a special mood or perspective from its audience to be effective. Arthur Schopenhauer lamented the misuse of the term (the German loanword from English) to mean any type of comedy.

Language is an approximation of thoughts through symbolic manipulation, and the gap between the expectations inherent in those symbols and the breaking of those expectations leads to laughter (This is true for many emotions, and is not limited to laughter)[citation needed]. Irony is explicitly this form of comedy, whereas slapstick takes more passive social norms relating to physicality and plays with them[citation needed]. In other words, comedy is a sign of a 'bug' in the symbolic make-up of language, as well as a self-correcting mechanism for such bugs[citation needed]. Once the problem in meaning has been described through a joke, people immediately begin correcting their impressions of the symbols that have been mocked. This is one explanation why jokes are often funny only when told the first time.

Another explanation is that humour frequently contains an unexpected, often sudden, shift in perspective. Nearly anything can be the object of this perspective twist. This, however, does not explain why people being humiliated and verbally abused, without it being unexpected or a shift in perspective, is considered funny - ref. The Office.

Another explanation is that the essence of humour lies in two ingredients; the relevance factor and the surprise factor. First, something familiar (or relevant) to the audience is presented. (However, the relevant situation may be so familiar to the audience that it doesn't always have to be presented, as occurs in absurd humour, for example). From there, they may think they know the natural follow-through thoughts or conclusion. The next principal ingredient is the presentation of something different from the audience's expectations, or else the natural result of interpreting the original situation in a different, less common way (see twist or surprise factor). For example:

“ A man speaks to his doctor after an operation. He says, "Doc, now that the surgery is done, will I be able to play the piano?" The doctor replies, "Of course!" The man says, "Good, because I couldn't before!" ”

The Simpsons is noted for using this technique many times to evoke humour. Former show runner David Mirkin often refers to it as the “screw-you-audience” joke. A prime example is in the episode "And Maggie Makes Three", wherein Patty and Selma are about to expose the secret of Marge's pregnancy:

Both explanations can be put under the general heading of "failed expectations". In language, or a situation with a relevance factor, or even a sublime setting, an audience has a certain expectation. If these expectations fail in a way that has some credulity, humour results. It has been postulated that the laughter/feel good element of humour is a biological function that helps one deal with the new, expanded point of view: a lawyer thinks differently than a priest or rabbi (below), a banana peel on the floor could be dangerous. This is why some link of credulity is important rather than any random line being a punchline.

For this reason, many jokes work in threes. For instance, a class of jokes exists beginning with the formulaic line "A priest, a rabbi, and a lawyer are sitting in a bar..." (or close variations on this). Typically, the priest will make a remark, the rabbi will continue in the same vein, and then the lawyer will make a third point that forms a sharp break from the established pattern, but nonetheless forms a logical (or at least stereotypical) response. Example of a variation:

“ A gardener, an architect, and a lawyer are discussing which of their vocations is the most ancient. The gardener comments, "My vocation goes back to the Garden of Eden, when God told Adam to tend the garden." The architect comments, "My vocation goes back to the creation, when God created the world itself from primordial chaos." They both look curiously at the lawyer, who asks, "And who do you think created the primordial chaos?" ”

In this vein of thought, knowing a punch line in advance, or some situation which would spoil the delivery of the punchline, can destroy the surprise factor, and in turn destroy the entertainment value or amusement the joke may have otherwise provided. Conversely, a person previously holding the same unexpected conclusions or secret perspectives as a comedian could derive amusement from hearing those same thoughts expressed and elaborated. That there is commonality, unity of thought, and an ability to openly analyse and express these (where secrecy and inhibited exploration was previously thought necessary) can be both the relevance and the surprise factors in these situations. This phenomenon explains much of the success of comedians who deal with same-gender and same-culture audiences on gender conflicts and cultural topics, respectively.

Notable studies of humour have come from the pens of Aristotle in The Poetics (Part V) and of Schopenhauer.

There also exist linguistic and psycholinguistic studies of humour, irony, parody and pretence. Prominent theoreticians in this field include Raymond Gibbs, Herbert Clark, Michael Billig, Willibald Ruch, Victor Raskin, Eliot Oring, and Salvatore Attardo. Although many writers have emphasised the positive or cathartic effects of humour some, notably Billig, have emphasised the potential of humour for cruelty and its involvement with social control and regulation.

A number of science fiction writers have explored the theory of humour. In Stranger in a Strange Land, Robert A. Heinlein proposes that humour comes from pain, and that laughter is a mechanism to keep us from crying. Isaac Asimov, on the other hand, proposes (in his first jokebook, Treasury of Humor) that the essence of humour is anticlimax: an abrupt change in point of view, in which trivial matters are suddenly elevated in importance above those that would normally be far more important.

Approaches to a general theory of humour have generally referred to analogy or some kind of analogical process of mapping structure from one domain of experience onto another. An early precursor of this approach would be Arthur Koestler, who identified humour as one of three areas of human creativity (science and art being the other two) that use structure mapping (then termed "bisociation" by Koestler) to create novel meanings[1]. Tony Veale, who is taking a more formalised computational approach than Koestler did, has written on the role of metaphor and metonymy in humour[2][3][4], using inspiration from Koestler as well as from Dedre Gentner´s theory of structure-mapping, George Lakoff´s and Mark Johnson´s theory of conceptual metaphor and Mark Turner´s and Gilles Fauconnier´s theory of conceptual blending.

You get alot of immature, stupid answers for your questions. You get alot of immature, stupid questions that you waste your time looking at.

Though it may not be attainable for whatever reason, I think yahoo answers should provide the following:

There should be seperate age groups with all 24 subject categories in each age group to avoid alot of stupid answers just to get points.

There should be a "mature audiences only" (over 18) category for things that young people shouldnt see, so we adults can talk about real things get real answers and feel free to curse if you desire.

There should be a rating for every user on this site. You could rate each persons answer on a scale of 1-10. If they average less than a 25% rating overall, they should have their asking and answering privileges taken away! Kind of like ebay's member ratings.

I reckon it depends on what kind of a person is buying the console...for example, if it is for senior folks aka senior citizens or kids I would certainly recommends Wii as it tends to simpler and has games which are more appealing to those audiences.

If it is for teenager or an young adult, I would certainly recommend either the 360 or the PS 3 as they tend to offer more complete/hardcore gaming experience.

Once you have the audience sorted out....then perhaps you might end up with the debate between PS3 and 360. At a broad level, PS3 and 360 have similar capabilities however I would suggest PS3 if the cost is not a factor (360 is certainly cheaper than PS3). for the following reasons....

The Xbox right now is the dominant system next to the Wii. The PS3 flopped big time from lack of availability and hardware issues. That CPU Processing Chip might be a huge amount of power and energy, but it is worthless if the majority of them have issues and are messing up. Not to mention the playback for PS2 and 1 games not working properly. 500 and 600 dollar price tag really turns people off big time especially for the bad launch games they had. Resistance was the only game that made high scores and worth buying. But 600 dollars for one 60 dollar game isn't going to sway someone to buy the system yet.

The Xbox 360 is doing mighty well, the Wii is doing surprisingly well and has made a huge hit especially for releasing the new Zelda for launch games. The PS3 needs to get their act together and not be afraid to spend a little money to fix their systems up and let them perform their true power and release out more to the public.

Nintendo have focused more on gameplay which makes the Xbox360 in a way; inferior to the Nintendo Wii.

It depends which areas you look at and what style a gamer you are.

If you like in-depth games with intense, amazing graphics, and realistic sounds when you walk leaves crackle and crunch, twigs snap and that mark is permenantly scarred on the game's interface. Games where each snowflake is different and no two raindrops are ever the same? Games where you play in 12.1 surround sound? Then get something like an Xbox360 or even a Playstation3.

But!

If you like games that are focused on the gaming expirience so much that you feel like you are in the game, where you are off the edge of your seat crouching on the floor as bullets fly past your head and you can really experience the game first hand, where you can buy pretty much any game and know it will be a fun, worthful experience for any agegroup/type of person... Get a Wii.

I got a Wii for Christmas, and I can honestly say it is the best games console that I have ever played (My reasons are above). But hey, it depends on what type a gamer you are, and what type of games you enjoy!

Good luck in making your decision, but I would go with Wii!

However, is it the best just because it is the most powerfull is a different question. The Wii is only 250 dollars as opposed to the PS3 basic model for 500 dollars. Also, the Wii is more geared to fun with the whole family allowing everyone to get involved because the controller is completely responsive to the users motion. "Wii can all play together." Although this is a very compelling argument to by the Wii, Playstation 3 reaches a more mature audience with game titles geared at an older age group. The PS3 was a development over the past ten years and has revolutionalized the way video games will look and operate. One other aspect the PS3 holds over the Wii is that it plays Blu-Ray discs. If your looking to build up your entertainment center, the PS3 might not be a bad place to start. Otherwise, if its pure fun and less cost, the Wii is for you.

Reply:Ok, I assume that you have chosen to accept these talks because you feel that you can offer your audience something out of it, and that it is something you feel relatively strongly about?

The only way to give any kind of presentation is to make it enjoyable for others to attend. You really are an entertainer. If you stand at the front and just drone on, no matter how informative your content, they will not listen. You have got to find a way of keeping their interest.

Try to make it amusing in places or get them to participate in some way. Maybe even use the impact of failure and it's consequences.

You want them to leave with the bullet points you made which you feel are important.

Think back to your school days, or college, university etc and think about how different your teachers got you to retain knowledge.

Everyone has their own style.

Tell them to think in advance of what are their strengths and weaknesses and any good reason why they are applying for the job.They must have done a little research about the firm they are aiming to join and know what the job entails.

Stress importance of punctuality, clean and tidy appearance, suitable clothing (opportunity for a joke here, such as not wear a clown outfit).

Politeness

Give them the followimg advice:

Answer questions briefly and to the point.Develop when asked to do so. Do not voice extreme views. Show ability to get on with others, and explain why you think you would be good in that job.

Do not show off and brag, or lie. Be yourself and show you are comfortable in your shoes.

At end of interview you will probably be asked if you have any questions. If so, that is when to ask what you did not understand over terms of service etc...

2.Again. Intro. Introduce yourself. Explain why you have come.

Explain the importance of formal qualifications in your job.

Tell them how to approach them: enough sleep. Eat properly.

Set a programme of revision in advance to cover essential aspects of subject. Chill!

With regard to the question about effective way of learning;

Yes,learning languages in their proper context is very effective provided you mix with the natives and communicate, but you do need a few basics learnt in class to get going, and formal lessons help you to grasp grammatical structures and use them correctly.

probably the wrong audience, most of you are young. but if i were thinking of settling down... how can i settle on just 1 woman's body type? i dont want to cheat on my wife. sure, it wont matter in 30 years what she looks like, but it will make a difference till then. lets say its between a girl with a beautiful face but tiny boobs, a girl with big boobs and an ok face, and girl with pretty good everything but really short. who would you pick? and yes other things are more important than physical, but help me out.

Are we a society that glorifies violence?

Modern entertainment seems to be full of violent acts. The heroes in action movies are often shown blowing the bad guys to pieces while the audience cheers. Horror movies show young women being butchered by sadistic serial killers, and people go to see those movies in droves. Many video games encourage violent tendencies by rewarding the players with points for every kill. The military has even resorted to using these types of games to train soldiers. Professional sports is rife with macho posturing and agression that often leads to physical altercations and even riots. Much of today's music is full of violent lyrics glorifying violence between gang members, against the police, and against women. What has happened to our collective consciences as a society? It absolutely SICKENS me.

It appears that we don't have a collective consciousness or conscience. If we did, or if we do, and were all tuned into it ... all would be absolutely sickened as you and I are. We are obviously in the vast, un-silent, minority of time. Violence and crude ways are the tools of the ignorant masses and through-out history they have prevailed. The times that we are living in are no worse...it is just so sad that they are not better.

Banners, articles and calculated number of free (reference) tickets on-line. I'll go for banner ads with sites that are popular among your demographics. For no hassle I'll go with Yahoo banners - they are good at targeting specified demographics and for creating awareness.

Maybe, I'll pay bit more attention to advertise on sites catering Hispanics in the area because of the family aspect of that carnival (or maybe I'm just biased).

The young mans sets up his first illusion. It is a dissapearing coin.

The trick goes off without a hitch,when in the crowd the silence was broken by what sounds like the voice of a Parrot.

Araw! Its in his sleeve!

The young man, not bothered by the Parrot, performs his next trick. A dissapearing set of keys. Again the trick is performed with ease. Then out in the audience.

Araw! Their in his pocket. Araw!

By now the performer is getting perturbed.

For his next act he gets a person from the audience to help him.

A young beautiful lady. The young lady is placed in a box and the door is closed. The performer spins the box,opens the door, and in amazement the young lady is gone. When again from the crowd.

Araw! shes under the box,shes under the box. Araw!

The performer is getting pi#@%ed to say the least. When all of a sudden the boat comes to sudden stop. Explosions are going on all around. Everything goes dark.

When the performer wakes up he finds himself floating in the the ocean on a chunk of wood.All alone he thinks.

Then he notices the Parrot floating on a piece of wood in front of him.

The two stare at each other for a long period of time without saying a word.

Pipkins. Cant remember but I think it was a toyshop had Hartley Hare a freaky looking hare who was a bit nasty I think, Pig who had a brummy accent and liked cream cakes, Octavia the Ostrich who used to sing opera and Topoff the monkey. These were all puppets, Hartley and Topoff were quite scary to look at. The Herb Garden was good with the dog cant remember his name now and Mr Benn was brilliant.

In Alexander, Hollywood was fine with the homosexuality. It was not until after the movie that homophobic people started complaining about it.

Now recently, 300 came out. Xerxes is basically a Freak Show. An uber-giant homosexual. Some would say that it is just a coincidence the only homosexual in the entire movie is a complete freak, but the director agrees he purposely did this.

Although it is true the director was and is a moron and you do make an excellent point regarding: what if it was a giant black man, I personally find it funny that not one person, at least not of any standing has pointed out that the majority of the Spartan army was homosexual. I also note some here bringing up Brokeback Mountain, as if this film should placate us or make us feel thankful that one film out God knows how many, was somewhat positive in it's portrayal. The play is a mystery, written to an audience of mothers and young children (lower than 6th grade, and usually around 3rd or 4th). The same aged children will be in the play. I need help coming up with jokes! However, my wit is really lacking. Any suggestions?

clown tricks......confetti instead of water in a bucket, etc.

Knock knock jokes are good verbal 'funniness'.

Also anything that makes grown-ups look stupid :-)
Reply:Two things that would work really well are puns ("Oh, I just can't bear this any longer" when a bear is chasing them, etc.) and changing a few words in famous, well-known phrases (although this will get more laughs out of the parents than the kids). Don't put actual "jokes" in it, don't have the characters telling jokes or anything, just fill it with puns and funny situations and it should be at least moderately funny. Don't be afraid to enlist the kids' help, either; ask them what they think is funny, and you'll have some great material to put in.

Malaysian government wants to ban fast food ads. What is your view?
Asian nations, particularly with Confucian backgrounds, tend to accept censorship and restrictions in the eye of the public good. It's really a cultural thing, and if censorship is already bound to run rampant, it's best that it's kept to something that could potentially do some good.

Still, I'd rather see less censorship and more personal responsibility held. To some extent, human nature just doesn't mesh with the raw levels of responsibility required of people, which is quite a pity.

I don't like it at all. Sadly, I have to wonder if perhaps it really is necessary.

So, would you mind if a 20 or 25 year old male went around the grocery store or at the community swimming pool saying the word va***a repeatedly in front of your 9 or 10 year old daughter?

I am not saying that the two instances are equal. But, each does raise the issue of "freedom of speech."

Also, is it ok to say the f word or the n word repeatedly in public. After all, we supposedly have freedom of speech.

If after you've discussed it civilly with him, if he sasses you or continues to press on the word in your presence or your daughter's at a grocery store, I'd tell the store supervisor.

The store does not want to lose business, and who knows, it may just be owned or managed by people of decency . . there is a chance that if you have to resort to this : he'll not allowed in the store until he shows the respect he owes the public, by cleaning up his language.

If all else fails, stick a bar of Lava soap in his mouth and force him to bite into it and hold it against his tongue for 15 minutes.

The bad thing is through my knowledge and understanding I see nothing that would say the girls were in the wrong, because the first amendment protects them. The closest thing I could think of would be the 'speech that may be harmful to children,' and/or time and place restrictions. I suppose the word vagina is no more harmful than the word cookie to a child (they both get eaten), though I am not sure exactly what context the stupid girls applied the vagina word to.

The time and place doesn't really work either, because it's not radio or TV; however, again, I don't think it can be proven that "vagina" is harmful to a child...........

I could not teach Health Education without using the word. However, it is appropriate to use the word in that circumstance. Repeating something over and over with no frame of reference or intent makes little sense. I could walk around all day and say "turnip" but... folks would just see me as a bit insane.

If a 20 year old walked around saying the word, I would seriously question his motivation. Yes, I would mind. He is helping create stigma by making a word used to described basic anatomy taboo. That is ridiculous.

Reply:i think it is proper to teach your children the correct words for their body parts instead of little kiddy words. It helps build their vocabulary. a vagin@ is what she has, there is nothing wrong with that word. I don't see how someone could go around saying it repeatedly unless he stuttered and got stuck on that word.

People are allowed to say what they please in public, it is up to you to let you child know that some words are not appropriate for them to use, like curse words or the n-word. I don't see nothing wrong with asking someone to refrain from using words around your child and if they are respectful they would stop, but there is definitely no guarantee, because like i said it is freedom of speech.

My biggest pet peeve is when parents don't restrain their child when necessary. I recently went to watch Ratatouille with a friend. Yes, I do realize that that is a G-rated movie; and, yes, I do realize that the audience should expect younger children. However, when a child is constantly yelling throughout the movie and kicking the head of the person sitting in front of them, I think the parent should do something with their child instead of saying that the person's head was in the way. So...what's your pet peeve? :)

My pet peeve, wow where to start, I will start with the kids; being in church and hearing the lids scream ( hello crying room was built for them), Sitting at a stop light or in my living room for that matter and hearing BOOM%26lt; BOOM%26lt; BA BA BOOM, that would be the "music" coming from the car next to me( ok, music has words people), loud people in movies, kids on leashes, dogs not on leases, dog crap in my yard from the dog next door, getting a late charge on my credit card ( one day late)car sales man that dont leave you alone, No sales man in the store to ask a question to, women dressed like hoochie mamas, men that walk like they have a corn cob up thier butt( with an attuitde to match)sitting on hold, waiting in lines, crumbes in my bed and a sticky floor. I have more but i will let it go .... for now! lol

Much national support is on the girls' side. The author of "The Vagina Monologues" just appeared on the "Today" show with the girls. The argument is "freedom of speech."

So, would you mind if a 20 or 25 year old male went around the grocery store or at the community swimming pool saying the word vagina repeatedly in front of your 9 or 10 year old daughter?

I am not saying that the two instances are equal. But, each does raise the issue of "freedom of speech."

Also, is it ok to say the f word or the n word repeatedly in public. After all, we supposedly have freedom of speech.

(Maybe the girls want to read lines from the movie "Blazing Saddles" where the n-word was said over and over.)

Its a brand new world and our ability to control the social environment has deteriated more and more. This isn't a bad thing because it forces us to have to raise smarter childern. As far as the specific question you asked I would personally be offended. But on the other side it doesn't help me to keep my child away from all things bad, when it could be benifical. Which in the above situation would be understanding that not all people hold the same level of value to all things. Which Whose Line DVD has the skit where Wayne Brady does a King Kong impersonation, goes into the audience, picks up a young woman, and carries her up to the stage, in the process accidentally hiking up her skirt in front of the whole audience? Or is it not on a DVD yet?

From what I remember, Wayne apologized profusely to the woman (named Melissa). In the spontaneous song at the end of the episode they mentioned the mishap several times, including one that wasn't aired with that episode, but it was later on in a "best of" episode.

Okay it is not on DVD yet. I just watched the entire season 1 Vol 1 and it wasn't on there. Though there was one where Ryan was frankenstein looking for a mate and he grabbed a guy from the audience and took him behind the "green screen" and made bumping motions at the side of the screen like he was having sex with the man. That was pretty hysterical. The man even played it up and come out from the screen all "disorientented" like.

And the only reason is that there was young kids in the audience watching this simulated BED scene live on WWE RAW !!!

probably because it sends out a good message about cliques, which can generally apply to anyone, not just teens. it's also a musical, so that could have attracted the older audience.

I recently became aware that the moderator of an online forum is a registered sex offender (male). The forum is frequented by mostly 30-something women and attracts a younger female audience as well. Am I "allowed" to call attention to the fact that he is a registered sex offender, or is he protected by some sort of right to privacy online?

Do you know what he is registered for? Many "sex offenders" are registered do the the vagueness of the laws. There are plenty of people who are registered as sex offenders because of the strict interetation of the law.

Such as someone who was 19 and slept with a 17 year old. Legally, that is statutory rape and requires the 19 year old to register as a sex offender...which is a brand they'll carry for life.

There have been others who are registered "sex offenders" because they went to the bathroom in public and a passerby happened to see their junk hanging out.

Just because someone is labeled as a sex offender doesn't mean they truly are. Before you go airing someone's dirty laundry, make sure it's truly dirty first.
Reply:I know of an offender website where they go to help keep each other accountable... it is like AA and they help each other survive after serving their time. It is so important that they have someone to talk to so they can survive out there. They have no ability to get a job, drive, live in a community, and many many other things we take for granted and this is not just temporary, it is for the rest of their lives. Some are arrested at 19 and even if they made a huge mistake, they will never, and I mean never be able to have a life. And yes, if you take time to look on this forum you will see men that range from having a girlfriend that was 16 and he was 19.... he will register forever. They need support or they will commit suicide or worse use drugs and forget why they are fighting to get well.... then we are in a very scary place. Let them help each other get well, I have read through this one and I see nothing but healthy support on getting better and coping with the repulse they see in others eyes forever. I had been watching Naruto on Cartoonnetwork with my son since it first came on air. I liked the show because it had a lot of action, interesting soundtrack, and a relatively deep plot. I started watching Naruto on Youtube soon after season 2 ended because I was anxious to see the second part of the Chunin exams. These were the English dubbed versions, and I realized that CN was watering the episides down for the younger american audience. I was amazed at how deep and twisted the characters lives were in the dubbed versions and I started watching 3 and 4 episodes a night. From episode 53 to episode 134 it seemed like all of the characters were developing in strength and wisdom. The action was really intense, and successive episodes seemed to go through waves of incredible intensity as Naruto and Sasuke final face off in a head to head battle. And then something changed. The episodes started to get weaker and less interesting. Now I'm at episode 177 and the show is really boring.

Does anyone here watch Naruto on YouTube?
actually there's been almost 2 yrs long of fillers for Naruto from episode 135 to 220.

I heard that its because the show was a hit back then and the producers wanna make more profits from on going viewers, they drag the show with fillers.

Since you're bored with these filllers, i recommend you to read the manga version (comic version), you can download these image files packed in winzip folder from many sites via google search. No drags, no fillers, all focused on the plot.

Watch the new season called Naruto Shippudden. That's the end of all fillers and the beginning of Naruto again.

I stopped watching since episode 155+. And now I'm glad they have the all new Naruto Shippudden, i'm gonna pick up where i left off.

Watching animes from YouTube is much more convenient. Used to download my animes episode by episode and it almost fill up my second hard disk.

Reply:You are in the black hole known as "filler". These episodes aren't manga-based, and most of them are pretty idiotic ("Laughing Shino").

Do yourself a favor: skip right to Shippuden (episodes 221-224). You will miss no plot details at all.

Shippuden is much better. The characters are all more experienced, and Sasuke is back in the plot.

The filler is pointless. It would be nice if the U.S. would just skip right to Shippuden [let's start a petition :) ].

Aladdin. Because I love the theme (at least my take on the theme of the movie..I am sure others think it has a different theme) to "Beee Yourself!" As Genie says in the movie. So many people are not themselves around the various groups of people they hang out with in real life. I try to always Beee Myself!!!! I also really like the fact that Aladdin stuck to his word and set Genie free as his last wish. It will probably always be my most favorite Disney movie.

Now Jafar is my second favorite villian! He's got that twisted mind and attitude down so well. He's also a whole lot more eviler than Maleficent; I guess because he's just so more fun to watch!

Why Romeo and Juliet Had to Die

In our world today people often cringe at the thought of “true love” in young adults. In Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare shows the audience that young love is often misunderstood and highly dangerous. For Romeo and Juliet, their young love brings a tragedy that is the result of both the miscommunication between all of the characters, and the speed of the play. The death of Romeo and Juliet, as a result of their young love, makes the audience question the true love of young adults.

When Romeo and Juliet’s young love, and fatal deaths, are questioned towards the end of the play, the adults start to realize the miscommunication between themselves and Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence notices his miscommunication towards Romeo when he retells the story of Romeo and Juliet’s deaths: “Meantime I writ to Romeo…but he which bore my letter, Friar John,\ Was stayed by accident, and…returned my letter back” (5.3.255-261). There was also a miscommunication between Friar Lawrence and Juliet, when he did not tell Juliet exactly how long the fake death potion would last: “Thou shalt continue two and forty hours\ And then awake” (4.1.107-108). As a result this made Juliet wonder if she would “wake before the time that Romeo\ Come[s] to redeem” her (4.3.32-33). There is a large amount of miscommunication between Juliet and her parents in many subjects, including her love for Romeo. Her own mother has no idea that Juliet is even married, let alone having her husband stay the night, when she thinks that her daughter is still “weeping for [her] cousin’s death” (3.5.71). There is also some miscommunication between Juliet and her father when it comes down to why she cannot marry Paris. Juliet secretly tells her father about Romeo when she says, “proud can I never be of what I hate,\ But thankful…for hate that is meant love” (3.5.152-153), but Capulet is too angry to notice her hints. The miscommunication of Romeo and Juliet’s young love was present throughout the play, creating tension in the audience, but this miscommunication was left unrecognized until it was questioned by the adults towards the end of the play.

For Romeo and Juliet, their young love is questioned because of the miscommunication between themselves and the adults in their lives, but another dangerous factor of their love is how quickly it moves and changes. The quickness of the play starts off right away when Romeo sees Juliet. When he first sees her he forgets all about his love for Rosaline and thinks that he “ne’er saw true beauty till [that] night” (1.5.60). Friar Lawrence notices Romeo’s sudden change in love when he states that “young men’s love…lies\ Not…in their hearts, but in their eyes” (2.3.71-72). By saying that Romeo and Juliet’s love is only skin deep, the Friar is backing up what the Chorus said earlier in the play: “Now Romeo…loves again,\ Alike bewitchéd by the charm of looks” (2.Chorus.5-6). Juliet realizes that what she and Romeo are doing “is too rash, too unadvised, [and] too sudden” (2.2.125), but she throws out that thought when she starts to talk about marriage: “Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow” (2.2.151). All of this rushing left both Romeo and Juliet no time to stop and think. For Juliet, her single moments of logic: “What if it be poison which the Friar\ Subtly hath ministered to have me dead” (4.3.25-26), are overwhelmed by both her love for Romeo and her other emotions: “Romeo, Romeo, Romeo…I drink to thee” (4.3.59-60). The many changes in Romeo and Juliet’s young love are a result of the speed of the play, furthering the idea that true love in young adults can be dangerous, and at times fatal.

In Romeo and Juliet, the audience is shown that the combination of miscommunication between others, fast paced love, and other important factors can be very dangerous. If all of these are combined together with a number of bad relationships, such as some in this play, the innocent, but true love of young adults can be fatally ruined.

Good for her. I'm glad she was honest. It seems in this world today we can't be honest for fear of hurting someone's feelings. Oh well. He should have expected a comment like that and known the reality of his sons actions instead walking in there with blind pride for him. He should have disciplined his child rather than enabling and coddling him. GWB is a giant baby. And the way he leads this country shows it.

"Now that George Bush has been in power, he changed the strategy and became open about aggression. He used 9/11 to openly attack 2 nations-- one that probably was not involved in 9/11 and another everyone knows for sure was not involved.

Afghanistan for years could not be utilized by Bush's oil companies to build a pipeline to the other "stan" countries that were oil rich-- because of an international embargo against the Taliban leaders after the war that USSR lost. (The US had given the Taliban the weapons)

Iraq was drenched in oil but also had an international embargo placed against it by George Bush's father. So the Bush cabal decided that the only way to get around it was to commit wars and place in 2 new governments to be able to say -- Hey, Lookie, there's no need for embargos anymore!

The whole thing was a Stupid Ruse against the world and so it didn't work. Also, hundreds of thousands of people in those two countries died, including the poor US soldiers, many of whom joined because they had no other options in America. The curious part there is the US government didn't seem to care.

Now the NEW US government will reconsider all of these faulty decisions and to get the country out of these problems, the Senators and leaders need to hear from people like you-- no matter your age-- who are asking questions. This is a new "Consensus" government that wants to include the People. Get involved by writing and going to your town meetings."

Directed towards a young-adult audience, and preferably not the typical girl-meets-guy-in-high-school type. I live for the supernatural, the thriller/action/adventures, and subtle fantasy/sci-fi.

To get a hint at my style, some of my favorite books include the following: Harry Potter by JK Rowling, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, 1984 by George Orwell, A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray, Beauty (A rendition of Beauty and the Beast) by Robin McKinley, The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix, His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman and The Giver by Lois Lowry.

I've played around with plots involving genetic experimentation, a post apocalyptic world, doomed love, magic, vampires, werewolves, you name it...but they all seem to fall short and I end up with six pages of meaningless text.

I think you may be looking to hard. The basic plot would be just that: basic. It's the complications that make the book somewhat interesting and the character growth and development (which you say you're good at)that keep people reading. Even something as trite as boy-meets-girl, though used fairly often, can still be enthralling when throwing in the complications i.e. kidnap victim of cult (mad scientist, limb-eating monster, etc), doomed planet, or even the return of magic. If you are good at character development, then the rest should take care of itself when you think "What could happen that would make the situation more difficult for the protagonist?"
Reply:Sorry. If you have to go to this length to get an idea for a story, I find it hard to believe you are destined to write fiction. Try writing something non-fiction, and see if that does not limber up the brain. Ideas are all around you when you get in the right frame of mind.

If it's any comfort to you, I'm no good at coming up with fictional plots, either.

Reply:if you want to be a writer, then you have to come up with your own ideas. Everyone has an imagination, so think about it. Just daydream, come up with weird scenerios, and just write. Write about just everything you think about.

Combine with effects like light going out, power outage, passing out, sleep deprivation, mean teachers, machines that fall apart, lack of information, fear of new experience. Add characters with stereotype names, and add humor. Throw in breakdown with normal solution to things like: door locked, exit blocked, you can't speak or see, can't be heard or seen, telephone battery dead, hands tied, etc, and put them on slips of paper in different piles. Draw slips from different piles till you reach your story. Don't forget: turn in plot, the aliens arrive, the aliens get blown up, magic saves the day, time warp, time goes backward, wake up. Have fun.

I really dislike books by John Steinbeck, and I didn't like Catcher in the Rye. I'm looking for classic books that would appeal to young adults. I love writing that is poetic. And I thoroughly enjoyed The Shadow of the Wind, by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, because it was very suspenseful. I like reading books about the Holocaust, like Night. I plan to read Antonement, by Ian McEwan, since I loved the movie.

So, can anyone reccomend classic books that aren't tedious reads and appeal to a young adult audience?

For poetic imagery I would suggest a book named Earthly Paradise by Colette. I have loved it since I was very young. A Thread of Grace by Mary Doria Russell is wonderful book about WWII that addresses the Italian front rather than the German one. It is an amazing piece of writing and sheds light on a forgotten part of that war. She also wrote one of my favorite books entitled The Sparrow. It is very intense but I love it and would have in my youth as well. You also might enjoy Iris Murdoch. She has so many titles that I won't suggest any in particular but she is someone with the knack for writing intelligent and poetic books that keep your interest completely. None of these are young adult books by genre but I read Colette and Murdoch as a teen and I certainly would have read Russell had she been writing then.

Reply:How about one of Jane Austen's books? My favorite of hers (in fact, my favorite of all time) is Pride and Prejudice. However, the rest of her books are excellent, too. There is Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park.

You may also enjoy Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte or The Tenant of Wildfell Hall or Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte (which is lesser known). They all have romance and drama and Gothic elements.

There is some element of mystery and suspense in several of Daphne du Maurier's stories like Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel.

Perhaps you would enjoy some of Agatha Christie's mystery stories like And Then There Were None (also called Ten Little Indians), The Mousetrap (a play), The Murder of Roger Ackroyd or Murder on the Orient Express.

I would also highly recommend Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery and The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Why is it when a female artist, like Christina Aguilera or Janet Jackson, brings up a young man onstage with her and simulates sex on him that it's okay, but a male artist like Akon or Bobby Brown, does it and he gets ridiculed??? I think it's equally controversial when a woman does it. I hear about these female artists doing stuff to young male audience members onstage that men do, but women get away with it. Why is this???

Because I think the men actually enjoy the experience. If they don't enjoy it, I think they'd be too embarrassed to do anything about it. Think about it...if they complain, they'll be labeled as gay or labeled as a p*ssy because they let the woman do it and they didn't want it done.

Several years ago I was in branson in the off season. A group of young people (Illinois college students, I believe) gave a play at one of the theaters. It was an audience participation play. There was the villian (audience - boos), Hero (audience - yea), the pretty young lady (audience - ooo la la) and etc.. It also had to do with trains.

Please help me find the title to a play.?

When Smash Hits was launched, information about popular bands appealing to teenagers wasn't readily available, the internet was in its infancy and the only real alternative was NME or Melody Maker.

Smash Hits appealed because it provided interviews with teen bands, had glossy pics and lyrics from chart hits. It also had a 'new' feel to its articles. Basically, how a lot of magazines are today, Smash Hits was like it years ago. It was aimed at teenagers and teenagers loved it cos there wasn't much else about.

i have a -small- Govt project. my partner and i have to videotape a short commercial (no longer than 1 minute). it has to be creative and target an audience (young people 18-24). and it has to be to get people to vote (because we all know that's a huuuuuge problem). most of our ideas have been really silly and stupid. i don't care if it's amusing or hilarious or completely not funny, just need it to work.

Here's a fairly simple idea.

Show a few clips of "famous" people in politics in the past/present - Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jessie Ventura... with a voice-over saying something like "These are the politicians that your grandparents and parents elected into office...."

And then show clips of famous people (such as 50 Cent, Jim Carrey, etc) with a voice-over saying "Who will you elect into office?...Voting, it's your voice, it's your future."

Okay, this may be sort of silly, but it may be cool. Let me know what you think!

It was a grand evening at Hollywoods Eygptian Theatre, highlighted by a film that presented a relatively young orchestra performing the sweeping landscapes of david axelrods compositions. It was great seeing a lot young people in the audience. the shopws popularity may be because of the heavily hiphop-sampled music acquired through Mr. Axelrods music. After learning Mr. Axelrod is an avid Dr. Dre fan, I have a greater respect for this composer/ arranger.

Did anyone attend the David Axelrod show in L.A last night?

The plot is roughly this: it's a medieval fantasy sort of book; not a children's book but more like a young adult sort of audience. It involves a boy who has to run away from home because his father was murdered by a competing knight, or something, and he goes on some adventures before returning to avenge him. I know that doesn't narrow it down much, but I don't remember much else about it......i do recall that right after he runs away it describes how he uses his tinderbox to make a fire and eats bread and cheese. (i remember looking up what a tinderbox was.) I read it when i was young, maybe 7 or 8 years old, so around 1988/9, though i have no idea when it was published--probably within 10 years earlier though. There's (surprise) some jousting involved too at some point. Much thanks to anyone who can help me out off of this infeasibly spare description!

umm, what about just "Street" or "Streetz" as a name for your clothing line? something tells me "Ghetto Line" might be offensive to some and too politically incorrect. even people with a sense of humor do not want to be labelled ghetto with their clothing or even want to acknowledge that they wear ghetto clothes. in most sentences where ghetto describes fashion, e.g. "your clothes are hella ghetto," ghetto is a derogatory term, usually meaning cheap.

My target audience is juvenile, young adult (9-17 year olds), boys and girls. I am not selling advertising at this time in the mag; it is bought either via subscription or at a store.

The suggested price on the magazine is $4.99. But I am going to be taking it to vendors (online vendors as well as those who sell through stores). I want to know, is there a rule of thumb for the cost I charge vendors? Do I give a "discount" depending on how many magazines they choose to purchase? Or, do I just give a flat rate of $2.50 per mag, whether they purcase one for resale or whether they purchase 1000? Recommendations?

Remember that rates are based on how much exposure your advertizer will get (how many copies a month do you sell?). Many new mags give away lots of copies to increase exposure - like the weekly entertainment papers - they are free to readers (greatly increases readership). then they can tell advertizers that they reach xx,000's of readers each week.

Yes, more than half of the jokes in cartoons could never be understood by kids let alone enjoyed. But hey.... kids are amused by fart jokes, bright flashing colours, and people falling over, so if the dialouge over the top amuses adults who cares?
Reply:I think the view of cartoons in the west has severely limited the medium. Japan uses the medium well. They reach all audiences with their stories. Some are suited for children, many for teenagers, while others are completely adult in nature.

Grave of the Fireflies I think is a truly fascinating movie. Being a cartoon with simple drawings, it has a very childlike nature.

It is story about 2 children who struggle in a very harsh environment that is anything but childlike. It is one of the saddest and most moving films I have ever seen and displays this child/adult rift in the cartoon medium well.

when i was younger, you'd be hard pressed to find any cartoons on any channel at any time of night that had adult themes. Today that is something you find every single night in either prime time or late night. Also, the design, as you say, is way more experimental now, a lot more adult themes involved too, and requires a lot more thought to appreciate, etc. As well as the dialogue, as you say as well. Today, even in kids cartoons, the dialogue is more complex, requires a little more concentration, age, and experience to appreciate. There's a lot more satire and sarcasm.

Back in the 80s or older, there was this group that very closely watched over what cartoons were allowed to say and do. I think it was called 'act' or something. Anyway, they had stringent rules. Lots of cartoons required education messages, anti-drug themes, etc. That group isn't around anymore, dissolved in early 90s And if you notice, as soon as that group stopped watching content, suddenly the quality of cartoons went up and they started getting more 'adult'. Not really in sex or violence, but in complexity, humor, and design.

Also, the success of the simpsons back in the late 80s really boosted the whole adult cartoon market as actually legitimate, at least in prime time. I'm glad they kept that open because now we do have more adult cartoons and they are taken more seriously as entertainment.

Of course, the original looney tunes were made for adults as much as kids, but those were shown in the theater.
Reply:If your talking about daytime aired cartoons (not Adult Swim/Anime Channel) Yes I feel they have become more adult oriented. When person has a young child in the house, then that household’s TV will be on cartoons, which the parent has to endure. The believe the writers now-a-days recognize this problem and are writing scripts that will be more amusing to the parents of these small children, with out crossing the line of graphic nature.
Reply:I think most "comedy" cartoons have two levels... one that appeals to children and one that appeals to adults.

I enjoy toons such as The Grim Adventures of Billy %26amp; Mandy and The Fairly Odd Parents. It might just be that I'm a little easy to amuse, but I think it is the sureal nature of the plots that appeal. Comedy cartoons when I was growing up were re-runs of The Flinstones and Jetsons and early Rugrats along with Loony Tunes (which I still like), but they didn't have the same style of humor that cartoons do now.

I think the semi-serious shows aren't as appealling... I can still enjoy some of them to a point though as I'm a fan of comic books so watch the Batman and Fanastic Four cartoons. They appeal to children as they appeal to me - moving versions of comic book characters. Sure the plots might not be as good, but...

I also like stuff like Samurai Jack and Kim Possible. With Kim Possible I'm sometimes surprised by the some of the "teen" issues dealt with in the stories.
Reply:Depends on the cartoon, they cater for all ages these days. For instance Family Guy is based on the more adult side of humour, South Park is for the late teens and Sponge Bob is for the much younger ages.

Personally I think its based on what we enjoy in our inner selves as my grandfather loved all the Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Foghorn Leghorn cartoons.

And also, why in the hell do the mainstream ones feature such sick exploitative elements in them, when most of the intended audience are too young to be exposed to such things? Ask yourselves: should CHILDREN learn about such things from stupid, lameass picture books??

I read the American ones, and my nephews and nieces read the Japanese stuff. The Japanse stuff is much more violent and perverted!

Another thing, sure comics may be for kids, but there are out there that are FOR ADULTS! Not just for little kids. That's why they have some "parental" secure-ness on the comics to tell "THIS IS NOT FOR CHILDREN! ADULTS ONLY!" If the adult lets the children read the adult comic, it's the parent's fault.

Don't go bashing on comic book artist because they draw "sexual, exploitative elements," that is how they orginally plan the comic! It wasn't meant for kids, it was meant for adults only!

Also another point to say: American comics are becoming over whelmed by Japanese comics, so called "manga." These Japanese comics are speading through-out the U.S. like bees and it can't be stopped. More teens are buying these "mangas" than regular comic books. You do have your orginal American citizens that buy American comic books, but since these Japanese comic books are sweaping the U.S. rapidly, it could be a possibility that American comic book artists are having a hard time posting their comics because of the "manga" main-stream wipe-out.
Reply:I am not sure what you mean by "sick exploitative elements" but I have been a manager of a comic shop for over 15 years now and I know that my customers are almost entirely over the age of 20 with most being in thier 30's and 40's so I would disagree with your "intended audience are too young to be exposed to such things" statement. Most mainstream American comics are now aimed at an older audience and have been for several years now even though D.C. and Marvel both produce some comics specifically targeted to younger readers.
Reply:children dont really read comics anymore. the only people i usually see at the comic book store are usually in their twenties or older. i think the publishers have tried to adapt to make their books and storylines more appealing to this older audience. which i think they have done a pretty decent job of doing. sorry to hear you dont like them because there are plenty of books out there that you might enjoy if you gave them a chance.

I HOPE it succeeds! Good job helping spread the word, I checked out the Site and thought it was really cool. Poetry is so beautiful already, this has a lot of potential to add to that. I just hope it doesn't take away from anyone's potential to visualize on their own w/ their unique imagination. It's kinda like reading the book vs. watching the movie (I'm a read the book person). Maybe you could start it off with a quote from her. She's said some pretty attention-grabbing things, and it would really transport everyone into 'her' world.

Like...

"I don't apologize for my diamonds, Rolls-Royce, Range Rover, or anything. Look, Queen Elizabeth has more diamonds than me. Why don't people attack her for it?" You can tie that in to: 1. A woman being proud of being rich and refusing to apologize for having money (after all, men never do, or feel like they should) and 2. How standards have changed for women (I mean, it IS true about Queen Elizabeth...) 3. How she's a hard ***, a ballsy person, but has all these incredible qualities (which you go on to explore in your speech.)

Take A lesson on a Tortoise: The teacher has gone to the trouble to set up a nice lesson ‘I felt pleased with myself knowing that the boys would be delighted with the lesson.’ And it backfires on him when the boys ask for rubbers. ‘I could not keep my stock, I could not detect the thief among them.’ The teacher relents and indulges the belief that he is not good at his job. ‘Like a bad teacher I went back on my word.’ He also seems to be clutching at straws desperately when he asks Rawson, Maddock, Newling, and wood to write down the name of the perpitrator or the crime. The audience is able to sense the teachers Turmoil. ‘I ask wood to write…. I promise not to divulge. He would not. I ask the boys he had named, all of them. … – I appealed to them.’

In ‘Growing up’ we are drawn to sympathise with Robert Quick when his daughters attack him. ‘They tore at the man and suddenly he was frightened’ Ironically Snort also joins in the affray. ‘Snort suddenly recovering confidence… seized this new victim.’ Later we see quick realising that his daughters had changed. ‘It seemed to him that something new had … his old simply and happy relationship with his daughters.’ Towards the end of the text Quick resigns himself to the fact that his place as the only man in their lives would soon be coming to an end. ‘In a year or two I shan’t count at all. Young men will come prowling like the dogs after Snort’.

The writers use of language enables the audience to visualise young men acting in this manner.

I think what you've done so far is very good, but it is really only scratching the surface. Assuming that you have to compare the 2 texts you cannot assume that other readers will sympathise with either of the adult males, so you have to point out how the sympathy came about. To do this refer directly to how the author's use of specific words within the text engender feelings; for example the teacher is 'pleased' and 'delighted' with the lesson however because of the 'theft' of rubbers and his inability to detect who was doing the stealing, he felt like 'a bad teacher' and thus went back on his word. This extract shows the power struggle that goes on in a classroom and is possibly an indication that the teacher is new and unable to command respect or obedience.

The second extract shows a similar theme where a father appears to be losing the respect and (he thinks) the love of his daughters. If this is the case, it would be easier to answer your question if we were given the title. you seem to have already decided that we sympathise with the characters at the beggining of each paragraph without arguing both sides. Your conclusion should always come at the end. Also when paraphrasing, you shouldn't put the quote into your paragraph. i.e:

The teacher at first thought the lesson would be a success:

"I felt pleased with myself knowing that the boys would be delighted with the lesson"

However, we see that the planning of the lesson then backfires when one of the erasers goes missing:

"I could not keep my stock" nor could I "detect the thief among them."

I'm sorry if this sounds like a lot of criticism and I hope it helps.
Reply:A few pointers. Don't start a sentence with the word "And". Rather than saying "Take A lesson on a Tortoise", just begin with "In 'A Lesson on a Tortoise'", go on to describe the scenario as you have, but rather than quoting whole sentences, use individual words or phrases which demonstrate the point you're making. Because you're describing what happens, you don't need to quote the whole section too, as you're simply saying the whole thing twice, only proving that you understand the text. So do the audience. You can refer to the text as though your reader also knows the book. You've quoted two texts, and said that the audience are drawn to sympathy for the adults, yet you've not said how the author does this. If you want to get a good grade, you need to analyse HOW the author sets about what they're doing, not just quoting sections of text and expecting the audience to go along with your theory because they feel sympathy, as you've said they would. The fact that the adults in these two sections you've quoted from, have the power and control taken away from them, one of them reacting with fear because of the violence of his daughters (note the word "victim" - an evocative word), and the other being forced to go against his ideal of how a teacher should act, because of the pupils' psychological games; they challenge his authority, and he reacts by firstly trying to make a deal with one of them, then his desperation is shown by the word "appealed". Look at the type of language used by the author to evoke the desired response of sympathy, not just the scenarios they've described. This will show that you have an understanding not just of what the authors are doing, but how they use language to achieve this.

As hard as it is to believe even most of the liberals get tired of incessant whining for hours at a time.

If you have ever listened to any of these programs (I know its tough, because each one only stays on the air about a week) their agenda for reach show either quickly reverts to USA, Bush, Conservative bashing or they are fighting with each other with the same rhetoric they use against conservatives.

How many days in a row do they think even the most ardent NORMAL person who also happens to be a liberal wants to listen to that. Apparently, not long. If there was a coherent message that appealed to most liberals, they would be able to maintain support.

The party is near dead and they know it and the DNC realizes that better than anybody. The same problem they have keeping radio stations on the air is identical to why they can't bring a candidate to the national stage. Notice their candidates have to spend half their life tap dancing around the 1,000 contradictory views liberals have with each other.

As just one of a 1,000 examples, imagine the mass hysteria among the members of PETA, The Sierra Club, Green Peace and every other "save this or that organization" when Kerry was toting around those shotguns for the world to see in his feeble attempt to appeal to hunters.

Now forget about them killing each other during a radio show - let's see them stay cohesive enough to win the Oval Office, forget it.

First of all, more democrats (1% more) scored "highest" in knowledge level according to your link. True, more republicans got the middle category, but comparing dumb to dumb, many more republicans than democrats scored lower in the "lowest" category.

Let me make an inductive leap in logic here: the lowest group probably had public education only (no private schools), and my guess then is that states with a majority of democrats do better with their public education systems. The poor republicans in their republican led education systems get left behind, exactly what Bush didn't want to happen.

be true to yourself. talk about things that have happened to you. make it personal. for the younger audience, you might want to find someone in that age range that you know, and practice your routine on them. don't worry if some of it doesn't seem funny to that kid, that's the best time to find out if something is going to work, before you get on stage. try to find out about the school they go to, the teachers they like, how they're school athletics teams are doing.......

I'm not sure the series lasted too long compared to The Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley Twins, but didn't the first book in the series have something to do with bad luck? I am a fifteen year old female who loves Beyonce's music and admires her to the fullest. When I heard about her going on tour, I was excited and dead set on going to see her for the 1st time in concert. However, I was in awe of the riduculous prices (even for the crappy seats).

My thing is, although Beyonce is internationally famous, she should still realize that much, if not most, of her audience is young people of color- people who simply cannot afford $150+ tickets. I think its outrageous. Like I said, I do admire Beyonce, but I think sista needs to remember where she came from. The reason why she rose to the top and became the celebrity she is, is BECAUSE of the fans that paid $50 for a seat. Yes, there are people in this world able to afford her concert, but I have a feeling that many fans, including myself, will end up feeling ostracized due to the crazy prices. Part of being a celebrity is being able to connect and reach out to their fan base, not leaving many out in the cold.

Is anyone interested in historic old theatres in the UK ?

I am gathering together nostalgic information on old variety theatres as they used to be right up until the 1950s and 1960s when television changed the public's entertainment interests. Preparation is under way to produce a book on the subject, which I feel will be of great interest. I would be interest to hear from anyone with reminiscences, particularly of the Midland theatres and music halls which will be included.

Expressions of interest are also welcomed from sympathetic publishers and printers. I believe there is a massive out there who would love to hark back to the "good old days", and a massive audience of young people, who like myself, were attracted to live theatres through the magic of pantomime.

Is anyone interested in historic old theatres in the UK ?
There is a lovely old victorian theatre in red velvet and rococco at westcliff on sea in Essex. Its quite small but ive seen many productions there and even been backstage on an open day and spoke with lighting and set design.

Its called the Palace theatre and I have very fond memories of the place, it only holds about two hundred people but its like a step back in time.

It has the country's record for having the most slanted gradient on its stage sloping towards the audience and some thespians say its a difficult one to manage.

Ive been to many theatres in Londons West end and have even had a scotch whiskey with Sir Alec Guinness in his dressing room at the Gielgud.

Another was one in St James Street, Nottingham. It is a modern theme bar now but was complete and original until the late 80s.

A last note, a tale attested to by Peter O'Toole -- - - many theatres might look Splendid and have big deep stages but the amenities for actors were Spartan or worse. Imagine a six by six brick 'cell' with one window high on a wall or no window. One cracked enamel sink and a make up table and mirror and a single chair. Where do you pee? In the sink, of course, of course with tool in hand what do you do when Bette Davis sweeps in unannounced? Washing hands hunched over sink stuffing in the appendage try not to snag it on your zipper...

For programming 39 is not too old. While the industry is aimed at 18-35 yo, the developers are mostely in there 30's and 40's. Most of the young people are testers, level designers, artists, and animators. The producers, designers and programmers are usually in their early 30,s or 40,s. The biggest thing is experience. If you eat breath and think programming you should have no problem. Keep in mind that the people in video game creation are video game building junkies. They live it, which means lots of 12 hour 7 days.

Just did a dissertation on radio chart shows at uni, I know some stuff which may help.

First, there were fewer mediums available when the magazine came out in 1977. There was no internet, digital TV etc. So the main sources of pop music were radio, the chart show on Radio 1 and Top of the Pops.

"Manufactured pop" acts played on their image as well as music to become successful. Bands and artists would be interviewed by the mag to promote their records, while the magazine sold copies as teenagers were interested in what they had to say (even it was stupid things like what was their favourite colour or something along those lines).

In the 90s Top of The Pops brought out their own magazine which segemented the magazine market. That plus more people getting cable and Sky meant teenagers could access pop music through MTV, The Box etc., hence no need for a magazine for info. The magazine eventually stopped last year I think.

Still Emap the company that owns Smash Hits were quick to get into digital TV and radio - hell The Box is owned by Emap, as well as Smash Hits TV, their website, Q TV, Kerrang etc so they know how to transfer a magazine to TV and DAB radio.

The website is an online version of the magazine, an evolution of the original mag you could say for today's teenagers. From a financial perspective the Smash Hits brand can continue to make money through sponsorship on the site and ticket sales made on it.

So it was cultural successful back-in-the-day because of less competition and its continue now because the Smash Hits brand has developed successfully into the internet which young people access.

Mind the media is continuing to segment so it may not be around in the next 10 years or so. Watch this space. Hope that answers your question.

OK. Here is the answer of why everyone hates Cena. He is the champion of the Raw brand. He has been champ for most of the year and a half, give or take a month or two for edge or someone, but he always gets it back. Lets look into this.

Remember when JBL had his run back when he still was wrestling? it was because VINCE wanted him to have the title. JBL was the golden boy. everyone hated him, and VINCE loved him as the champ. Same for Cena.

The ladies love him because they all think he is hot. Guys hate him because they know he can't really hold a candle to the Greats of the past, Austin, Rock, HHH(waiting for him to get back), Taker, the list goes on.

I had this dream that my older sister was getting married[she's only 16], but her fiancee left her at the alter. So she married some random guy from the audience. My younger sister and I were mad at her, so we left her wedding early and went to the mall. Then I saw this guy from my math class at the mall and he came up and kissed me. And then he held my hand. Then my younger sister and I went back to the wedding for the party with the kid from my math class. Then I was looking out at this pond while everyone was having a good time. I am a fifteen year old female who loves Beyonce's music and admires her to the fullest. When I heard about her going on tour, I was excited and dead set on going to see her for the 1st time in concert. However, I was in awe of the riduculous prices (even for the crappy seats).

My thing is, although Beyonce is internationally famous, she should still realize that much, if not most, of her audience is young people of color- people who simply cannot afford $150+ tickets. I think its outrageous. Like I said, I do admire Beyonce, but I think sista needs to remember where she came from. The reason why she rose to the top and became the celebrity she is, is BECAUSE of the fans that paid $50 for a seat. Yes, there are people in this world able to afford her concert, but I have a feeling that many fans, including myself, will end up feeling ostracized due to the crazy prices. Part of being a celebrity is being able to connect and reach out to their fan base, not leaving many out in the cold.

Is it partially our faults that kids are growing up too fast?

Think about it. When many of us were young, there was no Y/A. We didn't want to talk to our parents about sex or about relationships, so we just learned on our own! Most 12 year olds were having slumber parties and painting their nails, and wondering what it was like to kiss a boy. Now, it seems like more 12 year olds are having sex and asking questions about pregnancy. Today, I saw a 14 year old girl who asked about marrying her boyfriend!

On Y/A, many adults give advice to VERY young kids, not realizing how young they are. For example, "If you have sex, use a condom," or, "Make a move and ask him out!" Maybe this is good advice for an older teen, but so much of our audience is YOUNG. It seems like young girls are taking advice from older, more experienced girls.

Do you think the internet had anything to do with young girls trying to grow up so damn fast? Sex is no longer a mystery, it's a common activity for some REALLY young kids...

It is our fault we do not teach them enough or rather show them.

Apparently the way of the schools and sexuality, leader of the family, free give-away money for being lazy is not working.

Our offspring is lazy and worthless afraid to dig a ditch or pick up trash for pay, they rather wait by the mailbox for the monthly welfare check.

We say it is wrong for an above 18++ male or female to have sex with those who are -- 18 or less but then it is okay if they have sex with a kid their age that does not even have a job and cannot support a baby if one comes.

Older people have jobs, houses and secure stable life, young kids don't yet we allow them to sex make babies and then we as a country have to pay for it. How wrong is that?

How stupid is that?

They have cell phones that they do not pay for; they are not taught fiscal responsibility neither sexual responsibility.

Children never pay the electric bill, the petrol bill, the food bill yet they think they own the world and we let them.

The Oneida Society had a great work ethic yet we say that Younger and Older relations are wrong. How wrong are babies being dumped into trashcans because the mother is 12 and the boy is 13? Let us re-look at our society and see if what we are doing is wrong.

We are involved in a war that the oil rich country is not giving us a dime to pay our expenses yet the terrorist are making a killing at our gas pumps. As the move onto our shores and set up retail shops.

People say that kids are not supposed to masturbate at any age yet then they cannot get release except with sex with their boyfriend. How wrong is that?

Children will start sexual activity and others will be blamed for consexual sexual activity.

Children lie, steal and yes even kill yet we want to believe that they are so innocent, are we just plain stupid?

You may or may not agree with me but we all can agree we have some major problems with too many laws and government control tightening around our neck.
