Leviticus 20 - is a book containing incitement to genocide suitable for children.....?

"The LORD said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites: 'Any Israelite or any alien living in Israel who gives any of his children to Molech must be put to death. The people of the community are to stone him."

this is utterly unsuitable for a young audience, as well as being a terrible example to set to children

Leviticus 20 - is a book containing incitement to genocide suitable for children.....?
It is if it's not properly explained, isn't it?
Reply:If I understand correctly, "giving a child to Molech" was human sacrifice of children to the "god" Molech. The "nicest" version was a dangerous rite of passing children through a fire.

I think most children and adults would consider the murder of children utterly inexcusable, and only a few would argue against the execution of a (guilty) child-murderer.
Reply:As far as I'm concerned, the entire book is unsuitable for children and amounts to nothing more than brainwashing.

Note to readers... g'head, hit that thumbs down button. You KNOW you want to!
Reply:Moses was not a Jew. Moses was an Egyptian who apparently lost his senses when he lost favour with the Pharaoh. So that is when he became somewhat of a leader amongst the caste whom were, indeed, persecuted by all Egyptians. Moses managed to lead them out of Egypt to live in the desert for decades until they finally had enough and killed him. Moses was always telling them something he claimed God told him they had to obey or work to perform etc. He was a brilliant man but a nut job. They finally had enough. When he called for stoning people in his disfavour, they zapped him.
Reply:Well, it's the will of God to kill all those who sin against him. Better that these kids know what is comming so they can stone anyone who has to work on Sundays and such, or so they know not to do it themselves.
Reply:As opposed to the rest of Leviticus, which is a delightful read for the youngsters.

I'm 32, and Leviticus %26amp; Numbers put me to sleep! Seriously, how many different ways do you have to phrase the statement "Don't have sex with a donkey," before you think I get the point?
Reply:you can find numerous passages about genocide in the bible, but that is not one of them. that one is a law saying that people who burn their children alive to the god moloch get capital punishment.
Reply:I'm not aware of any pre-school or children's classes that teach from the book of Leviticus. Do you know a church that does this? Most teach children about Jesus and how He loves them.

However, when the child is a little older, I think it's perfectly appropriate to explain this passage. Those people deserved to be stoned because of their detestable practices. Molech worshipers sacrificed their infants to this idol. They would ignite the furnace inside this idol, and once it was red hot, they would place their children in the outstretched arms of Molech to be burned alive while drums were played to drown out the infant's cries. If members of a cult today sacrificed their children in this fashion, wouldn't they deserve the death penalty? I guarantee there would be public outrage.

And, as far as your assertion that this passage is a terrible example, I fail to see how it is. It teaches kids that God is angered when adults harm and murder their children and that there are punishments for those who do.

William II, where exactly are you getting your misinformation from about Moses? The Israelites did NOT kill him. This is how Moses died: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?sea...

Ali-tree, you wrote: "I'd rather have a man that worshiped a fire god, that proved to loyal and faithful to his friends and family, kind to his children and pets."

I wouldn't exactly call sacrificing your children to fire gods by burning them alive as being kind to your children or loyal and faithful to your family. And, Moses did not use sorcery - God used Moses in displaying His power to Pharaoh.
Reply:I disagree, I think it is totally appropriate.
Reply:You will find hundreds of unsuitable, terrible episodes in the bible. Check this out for 859 examples. http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/cruelt...
Reply:Its not just Leviticus. the whole Bible is full of murder, genocide, rape, incest and all manner of lovely stuff.

Makes Christianity more fun, don't you think?
